Ingredients:
16 ounce Italian bread loaf
butter & garlic powder for bread
1 pound ground beef
1 pound ground sausage
16 ounce tomato sauce
6 ounce tomato paste
1 medium onion, diced
7 ounce uncooked spaghetti
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, divided in half
2/3 cup Mozzarella cheese, divided in half
1 tablespoon Italian seasoning, generous
1 teaspoon salt + a pinch
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cook spaghetti in a large saucepan. Remove from heat and drain.
While the noodles are cooking, in a large skillet, cook the beef and sausage over medium-high heat. Add onions to the meat as it cooks. When browned, drain excess fat and return to pan. Add tomato paste, sauce, Italian seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper. Mix well. Simmer for 5-8 minutes. Add cooked noodles. Mix well again and remove from the stove.
While the ragu is simmering, cut the Italian bread in half with a bread knife. Cut off the center of each half loaf. Remove remaining loaves, creating a large well in each half. Butter the inside of the hole and the sides of the halves. Sprinkle with garlic powder. Toast in the oven.
Top with cheese - 1 part of shredded cheese on one loaf and one part on the other.
Bake at 375° for 15-20 or until cheese is melted and golden brown. Remove from oven and slice carefully with a bread knife to serve
